From Tumblr: Pick any passage of 500 words or less from any fanfic I’ve written, and stick that selection in my ask/fan mail. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what’s going on in the character’s heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

COMMENTARY
There have been a few scenes I have been carrying in my head since I started writing this fic ... over ten years ago. Seishirou with Subaru's lighter at the end of Crime. Subaru's confession at the MS Institute. The kiss under the fireworks in Kyoto. Matsumoto's death. And this scene. In my head it's incredibly quiet, with only the sound of rain, and slow. Every movement, every breath and every touch means something. To finally be able to write it after all this time was sheer relief because holy crap I've made it to this point. They've made it to this point. We've all come a long way.

Subaru. He's realising that he can't fix everything, that it's not his place to do so, and thanks to Matsumoto - who I adored writing, I really felt bad that his story had to end the same - he's realised that in a relationship you have to learn to forgive and let go of being angry and give primacy to the relationship. More importantly, he's realised that the Bet isn't just something he's trapped in, in a way, Seishirou is also trapped in it. Any other person, if treated the way Subaru has treated Seishirou throughout the course of the fic, would have walked away, but Seishirou is bound by his word and can't. This scene is Subaru applying all of that, and it's incredibly important that while Seishirou has appeared here, the first step is taken by Subaru. (The fact that Seishirou takes the second 'bringing the umbrella over them both' is just as important). It coalesces everything, and gives Subaru the confidence, trust and peace of mind to take the other first step of physical intimacy with Seishirou, something he's always wanted but been too afraid and unsure to go through with.

Seishirou ... is complicated. There's a hint of wariness and hesitancy on his part here, even defensiveness. He's not sure how Subaru is going to react - their interaction immediately previous to this was chaotic, violent, with anger and desire all mixed together - and he's here purely because by the terms of the Bet, his terms of the Bet which bind him to Subaru's side for a period of time. His pride however means he won't do more than that: it's essentially here I am, this is the bare minimum expected of me, but that's all I will do. Your move. Seishirou for all that he's the Sakurazukamori is not utterly without feeling, and for he himself he has been reaching the limits of his patience with Subaru for some time. (Side note: on the emotionlessness of the Sakurazukamori, I have my own interpretation which I'll be teasing out more over the rest of the fic, but the short version is not that Seishirou is utterly incapable of emotion otherwise he'd be a bland character, but the extremities of emotion, the profound emotion that collapses and changes your world, and more importantly empathy is a different matter). What is less apparent but I hope hinted at throughout the fic, is that he's also tired. It's not something he's aware of, but it's perhaps the most overt sign that even if he doesn't consciously remember the Final Day and whatever he felt for Subaru then, something inside of him does. His breath catching when Subaru initiates that touch of lips to palm isn't just a reaction of surprise and desire, it's a reaction that is not controlled. Seishirou is far less self-aware than he thinks and holds himself out to be - something the Sakura is well aware of.

As for me ... looking back at my posting history I was writing this chapter at the end of 2012 into early 2013. I was writing it having moved literally to the other side of the world starting a new job, dealing with the onset of European winter, and taking trips to London, France and New York. The characters have come a long way and so have I: when I started writing this fic I was in the first year of a law degree at university in one of the most isolated cities in the world. At time of posting the chapter I had been practicing lawyer for several years and lived in four different cities on three continents. There's still more to come.

Feel free to ask anything else :)

Thank you so much to everyone who read and enjoyed the final chapter of Morning! (Particularly if you were someone who started reading it nearly a decade ago :P). As it happens, there were two lines I reluctantly cut from that chapter that I thought should live somewhere, so on my morning commute this morning I scribbled a pair of drabbles.

Morning Conversations
- unwanted imagery
- scarlet familiarity

Hope you enjoy this added bonus!

In what is possibly the shortest chapter of this epic, and the fastest I've ever done an ND chapter from blank page to end(!!)

There's really no such thing as a short chapter with this fic T_T

This is all Becky's fault. COMPLETELY. Also I went to an eye doctor recently and now know far too much about the structure of the eye and what can go wrong with it.

S&S oneshot, takes place after Subaru's blinding by Fuuma in X and the destruction of Shinjuku. Can be read as a prequel to this other fic of mine hence the title.

"We're closed, sorry!" This call from the reception desk where Yukari the veterinary assistant and Michiko the receptionist were standing. As Subaru closed the door Yukari hurried over to him a service smile pasted to her face. "Hi there, sorry we're actually closing up so unless it's an emergency could you come back--" She broke off as she realised who he was. "Sumeragi-kun?"

Subaru bowed still holding on to the suit. "Good evening Yukari-san, Michiko-s--"

"Oh wow, Sumeragi-kun, hello!" Yukari's face was an flashing animation of delighted surprise. "I didn't realise it was you with that haircut, you look so different! And you've picked up Sakurazuka-sensei's suit, that's so sweet, let me get him--" With a grin she jogged up to the corridor that led to the surgery and back rooms and dramatically cupped a hand beside her mouth. "Sakurazuka-sensei, your wife's here!"

Subaru nearly dropped the suit. Behind the reception desk Michiko had turned a disapproving red. "Yukari-san, really," she chided.

"It's all right, we're among friends! Come on in, Sumeragi-kun, no need to stand by the door, when did you get your hair cut? It's a great look and really works on you, don't you agree Michiko-san? And I bet it works for Sakurazuka-sensei too if you know what I mean."

The grin on her face was slightly too wide, and didn't help Subaru regain composure. "I, I'm not sure I do, Yukari-san."

"Oh, you know,
works. Cute is one thing and you were very cute, but it's for kids and there's only so much Sakurazuka-sensei can do with a kid. You look older this way." She winked as if sharing a secret that Subaru didn't think he liked, and he liked less the assumption that he understood in the first place. "No matter what people say, there will always be those of us who mature faster than others, right?"

Subaru felt his face heat. Naive as he knew he was about such things, the implications beind Yukari's words were rapidly taking shape. He didn't know which made him more uncomfortable, the implications themselves or the fact that he was now able to see them, but then there was a shadow behind Yukari and his discomfort spiked into a flutter. "Subaru-kun grew up remarkably fast," said Seishirou calmly, coming out of the corridor into the reception's light. He had his glasses on and wore a white medical coat over his clothes. Matsumoto had asked if he was handsome and the answer was still glowing in Subaru's chest. "Practically overnight, in fact. Hello, my dear."

Seishirou went up to Subaru and, right there in front of Yukari and Michiko, bent down to give him a quick kiss on the lips. Subaru immediately turned even more red and ducked his head so as not to see Michiko's obvious embarrasment or Yukari's huge grin-- "Overnight, huh?" said Yukari archly. "Did you have a hand in that, Sakurazuka-sensei?"

"I certainly had my hands full."

"And your mouth?"

"I'll leave that to your imagination," replied Seishirou. He smoothly relieved Subaru of the laundered suit with one arm while the other wrapped shamelessly around Subaru's waist. Subaru reflexively stiffened but then Seishirou was guiding him past his staff down the corridor. "Keep going with the stocktake, we'll be in the surgery if you need me."

"Don't behave back there!" called out Yukari cheekily. Subaru felt his ears burn, even more so when he heard what sounded like reproachful whispers from Michiko that Yukari simply laughed away. They were cut off when having herded him into the brightly lit surgery, Seishirou shut the door.

No fic in this entry, but a tip:

[livejournal.com profile] x2009 starts today (or tomorrow, depending on which timezone you're in). For those who haven't come across it yet, it's a challenge to mark nearly two decades of TB/X fandom. Authors have to write a story with the theme 'ten years later' and the very exciting part is the list of authors who have submitted which for those who can remember back to the CFFML, SakNET and the CLAMP ML, has quite a few recognisable names as well as the newer ones. Yes, I'm on it. Thing is, but, this is a blind challenge, meaning that the stories get posted without the author attributed and readers have to figure out who wrote it, so look out for mine if you can guess it :)

Despite any presumptions to the contrary, I am still alive just not always present. Suffice to say full-time work, court cases, apartment renovations/management, social life, cosplay, part-time study, etc., means writing has been pushed off to the side in my list of priorities.

(Oh, and my desktop computer crashed as well, taking my music, media, fics, site and writing with it. Luckily most of my writing is backed up on my laptop, as for everything else ... well, they're inaccessible until I get a new computer and new OS.)

But until I get everything back to normal again (hopefully sometime next month when everything settles down), have something to read.
